SIGNS ON POWER POLES DANGEROUS, ILLEGAL
Did you know that your lost pet or garage sale flyer could be a threat to an electrical worker if it is attached to a power pole?
It is a violation of Chapter 157 of the Mishawaka Municipal Code to attach signs, posters, or other items to utility poles. All non-approved signs violate City Code and are subject to daily fines of no less than $25 per sign.
Posting signs on poles also violates Section 18 of the Terms and Conditions of Electric Service. Not only is it a violation of Mishawaka law, it creates other problems as well for our company.
The nails, staples, tape and rope used to attach the signs present a physical hazard to the linemen who climb the poles. They can also damage the lineman’s insulated safety gloves. A tiny puncture can expose him to severe shock from power lines.
The nails also damage the poles themselves, piercing the sealed outer layers, allowing insects and water to enter and accelerate the decaying process of the wood pole. When poles decay they must be replaced at a cost to the ratepayers (you) who own MU (and the poles).
If you see someone posting a sign on one of our power poles, please remind them of these hazards or report it to us immediately.
