It's All About Community Choice

More than 2,000 communities in the United States have chosen to own and operate electric utilities as vital infrastructure services, helping to meet overall local goals. These public power systems are as diverse as America's communities.

More than one in ten publicly owned utilities have already celebrated their centennials, while others were created just within the past decade. Some are in major urban areas such as Los Angeles, San Antonio, Memphis and Nashville. Most are in towns of fewer than 10,000 citizens. Some own very large power plants. Mishawaka is among the two-thirds which do not generate power but instead purchase electricity for their citizens from other utilities. Public buying power allows the citizens of Mishawaka to enjoy excellent rates.

FACTS:

In Mishawaka, we have come to depend on our community to further our health and well-being, education, public safety, and economic progress.

Hospitals, schools, parks, police and fire departments, trash/recycling pickup, and water and sewer systems are just some of the services provided to meet these goals. No two communities in this country are alike, or offer or deliver services in the same way.

Instead, each community is a reflection of its heritage and its citizens, with services tailored to suit the local economy, geography and culture.
