Your Hometown Utility Company
“A company with only the good and welfare of the city at heart”
Mishawaka Utilities is pleased to announce that you can now pay your bill online via eCheck or Credit Card.
Mishawaka has been served with electric and water utility services since
1890. By 1903, Mishawaka’s growth called for increased capital to
fund necessary utility extensions. An integrated management approach,
bringing both utilities under one umbrella, was formalized on April 3,
1903, when Mishawaka's City Council created the Mishawaka Public Utility
Company—Mishawaka Utilities as we know it today.
Now in our second century of reliable hometown service, we celebrate the
vision first expressed by our founders expressed above. In Mishawaka vital,
core utility services are not controlled by out-of-town corporations which
have the good and welfare of absentee stockholders at heart. Rather, for
more than 100 years, Mishawaka's citizens have enjoyed the advantage of
local ownership and control. It is with that pioneering, independent spirit
that we are proud to invite you to drop in to this site and look us over.
If there is some way we can become better - or serve you better - please
just let us know.
An OVERVIEW
Mishawaka Utilities is owned and operated by the
City of Mishawaka, Indiana for the sole purpose of providing quality electric,
water and wastewater treatment services for our citizens.
MU is governed by a three-member utility service board, appointed by
Mayor Jeffrey L. Rea. Board members are Gary E. West, Ronald "Mike"
Watson and Ken Prince. Rates and charges are approved by this Board,
the Mishawaka City Council and the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.
Our water works and electric companies
were formed in 1890. On April 1, 1903, the Mishawaka Public Utility
Company was formed with the issuance of $100,000 of public bonds.
This issue paid off old debt, extended water pipes and electric
lines, and built Mishawaka's first City Hall, which was located
at the corner of First and Church Streets.
Wastewater Treatment
did not arrive in Mishawaka until 1952. A major upgrade of that
plant was completed in 1993. Our second major plant upgrade ($38 million) is currently under way and should be completed by January 2008.
Today, these three utilities serve a population of more than
46,000 people (27,000 customers). Annual revenues exceed $50 million.
Our 165 employees pride themselves in providing reliable utility
services at competitive rates. Mishawaka's rates for these three
utility services are consistently among the lowest in the state
of Indiana for cities our size. In Mishawaka, the customers we serve
are the taxpayers who own us; we are committed to giving them the
quality customer
service they deserve. The way we see it, they have
a right to challenge us to constantly improve our services and performance.
We are proud of our heritage and our community. Mishawaka is more
than just a nice place to visit—we believe it is the best
hometown in America.
