Biosolids are stabilized organic and inorganic material generated
in the treatment of municipal wastewater. For centuries farmers
have known the value of supplementing the soil with nutrients and
fertilizers to enhance the growth of their crops.
This has been accomplished through natural means such as manure
spreading and man-made additives such as chemical fertilizers. Farmers
have found that biosolids provide excellent soil enhancement and
fertilizer.
Mishawaka has been issued a permit by IDEM
(the Indiana Department of Environmental Management) for
land application of biosolids in the Indiana counties of
St. Joseph, Marshall, LaPorte and Elkhart. Under
this land application program, farmers can receive the biosolids
free of charge. You can see more about the IDEM and/or
the land application program at http://www.in.gov/idem/land/landapp.
