Battell Community Center, formerly Battell Elementary School, was built in 1900 and the West addition, which faces Main Street, was added in 1920. This building considered a landmark of Mishawaka is located at 904 N. Main Street (map).

The City of Mishawaka purchased the facility for the amount of $1.00 in 1982, with a goal in mind to provide a place of Senior Citizens to gather for social and recreational activities. Renovation began in 1982 and by 1983 the kitchen-dining room facility was opened to the public with the REAL Services Nutrition Site program. Through continued fundraising and donations, the remodeling continued and five additional rooms were renovated.

In 1992, under a new Battell Administration/Staff, renovation continued and the facility became a Community Center for all ages to enjoy. A total of 70 programs for all ages were up and running.

Currently Battell Center offers a newly renovated auditorium, special events and classes for all ages, recreation and club activities, various fitness and health classes, art and music, quilt making and sewing and much, much more.
